52,000 years ago. Today I am trying to imagine what our world would have been like then. A recent discovery of an old forest from those ancient days has brought to my attention again how little we really know about this world that we call home. What was most interesting about this discovery was that the forest was underwater. The stumps of hundreds of trees are now being enjoyed by fish, crustaceans, sea anemones, and other underwater life since this beautiful sanctuary has been uncovered.
The video in the article below shows the extreme beauty of this hidden treasure. This area was found in the Gulf of Mexico after it was uncovered by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, and is now exposed to oxygen and beginning to decay. This area would have been dry land before the last ice age, now 60 feet underwater; scientists have determined that these trees are about 52,000 years old.
This discovery has on my mind how many more amazing discoveries we will uncover in our lakes and oceans, and how long it will take to understand these great bodies of water, especially with so many caves, depths, or crevasses that humans cannot reach. Really, all this means is Atlantis really does exist and maybe one day there will be a human or ROV to reach it.
Share your thoughts; we’d love to hear about your underwater mysteries.
