The Canadian Ocean Protection Plan aims to increase marine safety by providing the means to closely monitor shipping vessels navigating through its waters.


With Canada aiming to increase marine safety within its coastal shores, Deep Trekker Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) prove to be well suited for the task. Through the Ocean Protection Plan, the Canadian Government plans to increase funding to marine safety services to each of the country’s coasts; including the shipping passages in the Arctic waters.

The program highlights the need for more Coast Guard depots for increased emergency response times and tougher regulation on ships transporting goods.

Increased Marine Safety for Shipping Vessels

Aside from expanding the emergency response fractions, the program looks to support the communities that take residence in Canada’s northern territories. In the most remote regions in the Arctic, the only means of hauling supplies, such as food, clothing, oil, and gas, is by marine transport.

To aid these establishments and to bolster marine safety through these shipping passages, the Ocean Protection Plan focuses strict monitoring processes on vessels navigating through Canadian waters. Ship hulls are inspected for any signs of damage or contamination that could harm the local environment. Coast Guard units dive below the surface or deploy underwater cameras to evaluate the integrity of the vessel.

Underwater cameras, otherwise known as Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV), have become more commonplace when it comes to underwater inspections. Deep Trekker’s DTG2 and DTX2 underwater drones are widely used in the shipping industry worldwide to monitor the overall health of a vessel.

With rechargeable Lithium Ion batteries housed within the units, Deep Trekker ROVs have the capability of being deployed from anywhere; without having to carry around additional generators or topside power. On an hour and a half charge, the underwater drones are able to spend up to 8 hours in operation.

From the handheld controller, operators are able to inspect what is happening below a hull via the live video feed from the ROV; all while standing directly atop the deck of the ship.

These underwater camera systems have proven to be the ideal solution to inspected the bottom of hulls. Port authorities utilized the drones to monitor the vessels entering their waters for any signs of contraband or invasive species.

Ship owners take advantage of the ROV’s easy-to-use system to regularly monitor their vessels’ anti-fouling paint or sacrificial anodes. Additionally, using the attachable thickness gauge, owners get a clear reading on the overall integrity of the hull.
