Ancient Aquaculture Practices

A study from Simon Fraser University has found that ancient clam beaches in the Pacific Northwest are not as natural as they were previously perceived to be. Researchers have found that many areas were in fact cultivated by First Nations proving what many have already believed: that Indigenous peoples around the globe practiced sophisticated marine management. By working with indigenous groups in the areas, the team of researchers are comparing clam garden productivity to that of modern aquaculture and assessing whether the clam gardens help buffer against increasing ocean acidification. Their hope is that modern aquaculture practices can be improved by looking at past methods. Read more here.
