The initiative has been created to simulate stormy ocean conditions so that projects that are set to be built within the oceans can test the elements before beginning construction. "The W2 Ocean Engineering Laboratory will test the strength and seaworthiness of structures such as boats; offshore wind, tidal and wave energy facilities; aquaculture ventures; oil and gas equipment and critical infrastructure such as ports and bridges" explained director Habib Dagher.
The simulation center will also be used to determine the potential effects of sea levels rising in coastal communities such as Portland and New York City.
The facility is scheduled to be unveiled today, where ocean observers and professionals will gather to attend the event.
At Deep Trekker we love hearing about initiatives that are set on creating a greater understanding of the ocean and possible ways of working with the ocean. Being one of the largest forces on Earth, the potential for industries to expand within the waters is vast, but a key component of expansion is the understanding of the oceanic systems and wildlife. While we are all for developing industries and business within the oceans, we do believe that they needs to be highly researched and tested to ensure that environmental impacts are limited.
A center like this one at the University of Maine offers the perfect opportunity for groups and businesses to test out their projects and initiatives before implementing them in the real ocean.
