Dubai, UAE – The Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN emphasizes aquaculture as one of the fastest growing food production sectors in the world. As food security poses potential threats to the Middle East, especially in the GCC area, Deep Trekker looks to create viable robotic solutions for ongoing aquaculture inspections and food supply.

From March 6 to 8, Deep Trekker will present its fully submersible, Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) at AquaME, offering solutions to fish farmers and underwater operation in aquaculture.

What’s Happening at the AquaMe Conference

The 2018 AquaME Conference, located at the Dubai World Trade Centre, welcomes products and technologies catering specifically to the region’s aquaculture industry. The lack of fresh water resources, harsh weather conditions and suitable soil for vegetable and fruit farming, has encouraged the Middle East to turn to aquaculture as a significant source for improving the region’s food security.

Given the global decline in wild catches, the growth trend in aquaculture is expected to continue globally. To keep up with the growing seafood demand in the Middle East, technologies such as Deep Trekker’s remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and surveillance systems (DTPods) are being integrated into aquaculture operations.

“We are thrilled to be attending AquaME to present solutions to food security in the Middle East, says Sam Macdonald, President, Deep Trekker. “With an increase in the need for sustainable protein, and therefore the consumption of fish, it is critical to develop technologies in support of aquaculture monitoring in these regions.”

Deep Trekker Displaying Underwater Robots for Aquaculture

Deep Trekker will present its fully submersible ROV – the DTG2 – used for efficient and thorough aquaculture inspections. Equipped with an Ultra HD Camera for capturing high quality footage in depth ratings of 150 metres (500 ft), regular inspections of nets, mooring lines and cages can be done to help ensure the integrity of aquaculture farms. With onboard batteries with up to 8 hours of battery life, farmers have the opportunity to inspect without the need to incur high costs of divers and in turn create the framework for aquaculture in the Middle East.

Deep Trekker President, Sam Macdonald invites attendees to join in on the conversation about how Deep Trekker ROVs are bringing innovation and further capabilities to aquaculture. Macdonald will be speaking at Za’abeel Hall on March 6th at 3:40pm.

    Canada is committed to science and evidence-based decision making when it comes to the future of the country’s aquaculture industry, Dominic LeBlanc, its fisheries minister, said in response to the vote in favor of a bill which will end salmon farming in the US State of Washington, reports SeaWestNews.  “We understand Canadians’ concerns around aquaculture and are committed to science and evidence-based decision making,” LeBlanc said, adding that a government panel is being convened on the appropriate use and consideration of scientific evidence, as it relates to aquaculture regulation. On Friday, Washington senators voted to stop aquaculture for Atlantic salmon in state waters after the current leases run out in 2025. The bill is a response to the controversy that followed the collapse of a Cooke Aquaculture farm in the state last August, which resulted in Atlantic salmon escaping into the Puget Sound.
