A prevalent topic that has been explored extensively in the recent months has been the recent decrease in Chilean salmon production. With the outbreak of salmonid rickettsial septicaemia (SRS), native to Chile, the main course of action has been to increase the use of antibiotics as farmers try to eliminate the disease. Right now the focus is on eradicating SRS which means increasing antibiotic use despite most consumer's opposition to the use of medication in the fish they eat. Undercurrent News takes a deeper look into the challenges surrounding the Chilean aquaculture market.

"As reported previously, this year's drop in Chilean salmonid production will be the first since 2010, when the country's production started recovering from the infectious salmon anemia (ISA) crisis, after aquaculture producers joined in neighborhoods under the General Law on Fisheries and Aquaculture." With the outbreak of SRS Chilean increased their antibiotics use by 25% in 2015, explaining why the nation has experienced a drop in production since the beginning of 2015.
As 2015 continues we hope to see a recovery of the Chilean salmon industry. While SRS is native to Chile, we do urge all farm managers around the world to do everything they can to prevent disease outbreaks and mitigate the effects that can take place if an outbreak does happen. That is why we highly suggest inspecting your pens and fish daily to ensure that your species are schooling properly and ensuring that they are not acting in strange ways. The first step to combating disease is identifying a problem as soon as it happens. With a mini-ROV like a DTG2 you can perform daily inspections easily and efficiently to ensure that you continue to maintain healthy and happy fish production.
