Drones are the way of the future, and it's an industry proving lucrative for both those developing the technology as well as for those using it. An unmanned aerial drone was initially introduced to the general public from its military roots as a form of recreation, but are now being utilized to perform work tasks in a multitude of commercial industries. PwC estimates that the drone business today is valued at over $127 billion dollars. Ever since Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon announced in 2013 that they were testing drones as a form of delivery, the commercial market has been coming up with endless opportunities for the utilization of drones in their given sectors.

The use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV's) for infrastructure inspections is big business. Drone market analysis indicates that infrastructure has the greatest potential to utilize drone technology, with an already impressive spending of $45.2 billion dollars. Some reasons for this growth are the state of aging infrastructure on a global scale and the significant benefits (both economic and environmental) in keep bridges, damns, oil rigs and other types of facilities operational and safe. Although it is essential to upkeep and monitoring this infrastructure, these types of inspections are tedious, incredibly expensive and dangerous. UAV's have become the chosen platform to perform many of these inspections with their ability to take high-resolution images, capture video and relay data, many of these inherent dangers and difficulties are mitigated.

Inspection and monitoring of aging highways, road, and bridges is a mandatory endeavor. Our roadways are what transport us to work, home, and deliver essential goods to communities daily. The need for continual maintenance and repair is growing annually as this infrastructure continues to age. According to one infrastructure report card, 25% of bridges are in fair to poor condition.
Perhaps even more alarming, is the massive costs involved in this kind of maintenance. The submerged piers of a bridge, which are an integral part of an inspection, can be difficult to reach. Traditionally, a team of commercial divers would be deployed to check for cracks, indications of structural stress, loss of aggregate and overall integrity. It is a tedious task, with water currents, visibility, dive times and potential bridge closures driving up the cost of the assessments and repairs.
